First day in Maui and it's very windy for the time of year. Picked up the hire kit from Neil Pryde Maui and headed to Kanaha Beach Park as it's the most benign, ideal for the mixed abilities in our group of 12.

After a quick low down on location of the reefs I rigged a 4.1 NP Combat to go with the JP Wave 80. The board was a bit large for the sail but I had erred on the side of caution with the extra volume on advice from the shop.

The wind was patchy on the inside so it was a slog out to the wind line then head up to the Uppers reef break. After a few runs I caught a wave and got 3 bottom turns. Some good jumps on the way out through the Washing Machine break (so called as the wave can come from the side very suddenly with no wind to balance). Learnt the valuable lesson of not putting my feet down when I fell in as it's razor sharp.

Excellent first day with a gentle introduction to Hawaiian waves.
